Patients undergoing dialysis treatment across Swansea Bay will now benefit from quicker, easier, and more comfortable assessments thanks to a generous grant from Kidney Wales.

Earlier this year, Kidney Wales invited renal units across Wales to apply for a share of their £20,000 NHS Equipment Fund, designed to support equipment purchases that directly improve patient care. Our Renal Vascular Access Team was awarded funding to purchase two vital pieces of equipment – a finger pressure monitor and a portable ultrasound scanner. But what does this mean for patients?

The finger pressure monitor is a clever piece of kit that checks the blood flow through a patient’s fistula or graft. By spotting any issues early, our team can act quickly to prevent problems that might stop dialysis from working effectively.

The portable ultrasound scanner is equally game-changing. Instead of patients having to travel to hospital imaging departments – with some coming from as far as Aberystwyth to Morriston Hospital – our SBU renal team can now carry out detailed vein and artery assessments right at the bedside. This reduces travel time and stress, and ensures patients get the care they need without delay.
