Why Andrew is Taking on Jiffy’s Cancer 50 Challenge

When Andrew from Carmarthen was diagnosed with cancer in early 2024, he knew the road ahead would be tough. However, not facing it wasn’t an option. What followed was a 9-week treatment journey with the South West Wales Cancer Centre, based at Singleton Hospital in Swansea.
From the first day, the team made a difficult process just a little easier. After struggling to even walk into the hospital at the start, Andrew felt instant relief after his first treatment. But like many, he had to balance that with the side effects that followed. With support from incredible NHS staff at Singleton, Prince Philip, and Glangwili hospitals, and unwavering care from his partner Cat, Andrew pushed through.
“Cat was amazing throughout, she was before and still continues to be” he says. “She put her life on hold to care for me and put my needs first, travelling back and forth for an hour each way to hospital in Singleton, researching, shopping and keeping friends and family updated”.
Fast forward to July 2024, Andrew was given the all clear!
Now, he’s back on the bike and taking part in Jiffy’s Cancer 50 Challenge, not just as a personal goal, but as a way of giving back.
“If we can all give a little, it all starts to accumulate into something great, helpful and worthwhile. Each year this could be one of my little ways of giving back, others of all abilities should consider it.”
Andrew is riding to raise money for the very services and teams that helped him through the hardest months of his life. His message to others? Listen to your body. Ask questions. Don’t ignore symptoms – even the subtle ones. And know that support is out there when you need it.
