Fantastic Fundraising: September

September has been another brilliant month of fundraising and support for Swansea Bay Health Charity. We’ve seen such a range of activities including a quiz night, workplace volunteering, a golf day and a disco night!
Thank you to everyone who has supported our local NHS charity this month. Your fundraising helps us go above and beyond core NHS funding, supporting patients, families and staff across Swansea Bay.
A quiz community with a big heart
What started as a weekly pub quiz has become a longstanding fundraising tradition, with members of the Pontarddulais Conservative Club Pub Quiz raising £16,250 for Swansea Bay University Health Board over the past 15 years.
Most recently, Chairman Eirwyn Evans and his wife Hilary donated £500 to support the work being done by the services that saved their lives. Eirwyn donated his half to Ward 11 Haematology, and Hilary donated hers to the GI Research Fund, supporting Dr Daniel Hanratty’s work – the surgeon who saved Hilary’s life.
Hilary recently underwent bowel cancer surgery at Singleton Hospital, while Eirwyn received treatment on Ward 11 Haematology. In recognition of the care they received, the couple split their £500 donation equally between the two wards.

Every Sunday, local participants from Pontarddulais pay £2 to enter the quiz and raffle. When the fund reaches £500, one team chooses where the money will go.
“It was our team’s turn to select the charity, and because Hilary and I were going through this, we decided now to give to the hospital.”
Their latest gift adds to a long history of supporting our local NHS charity, including Neonatal Intensive Care, the Breast Care Unit and Morriston Hospital ITU. Not only has £16,250 been raised for various Swansea Bay Health Charity funds, but Eirwyn estimates the quiz has raised around £40,000 in total since it began, with donations also benefiting food banks, schools, community groups, the RNLI and many other causes.
We’re incredibly grateful to Eirwyn, Hilary and everyone involved in the Pontarddulais Conservative Club Pub Quiz for making generosity and community spirit such an important part of their Sunday tradition.
Barclays team goes the extra mile

At Swansea Bay Health Charity, we’re lucky to have some incredible ties to local and regional businesses. Recently, five wonderful Barclays colleagues chose to dedicate their Saturday to volunteering at Touched by Cancer, while fundraising as part of a workplace match funding scheme.
From this, Kimberley, Alex, Michelle, Olivia and Donna raised an incredible £5,000 for the Going the Extra Mile for Cancer Appeal.
The tournament raised funds for our Going the Extra Mile for Cancer Appeal, which reached its £200,000 target on the day thanks to the collective efforts of our incredible supporters. The Barclays team played their part behind the scenes, giving their time and energy to help make the event a success.
For Kimberley, supporting the appeal was particularly persons, after her father’s own cancer battle:
“My father had cancer and lost his battle in 2011. He visited Singleton often and I wanted to give something back.”
Cathy Stevens, Community Support Charity Officer at Swansea Bay Health Charity, said:
“The support we received from the Barclays team was absolutely fantastic. They threw themselves into the event, helping with everything on the day and making a real contribution to its success. Partnerships like this demonstrate what can be achieved when businesses, volunteers and communities come together for a shared cause.”
The team have already said they want to return next year, hopefully bringing even more Barclays colleagues along to volunteer!
Another great year for Carwyn’s MS Golf Day
Carwyn Lewis and his family have once again gone above and beyond to support the MS Neurology Fund at Morriston Hospital, raising an incredible £5,800 at this year’s golf day.
Now in its fourth year, the event at Carmarthenshire Golf Club brought together friends, family and supporters who share Carwyn’s passion for making a difference.
A huge thank you to Carwyn, his family, friends and everyone who supported the day. Your continued dedication and generosity help support important work for patients and staff at Morriston Hospital.
We’re already looking forward to the fifth edition next May!

Shine Cymru lights up Cwtsh Natur
The young adults at Shine Cymru Life Skills have been having plenty of fun while fundraising for our Cwtsh Natur Appeal!
At their recent Disco Night, the group held a raffle and raised £120 towards the appeal, with the young adults getting fully involved in the fundraising and enjoying a brilliant night together.
Cwtsh Natur has also been chosen as Shine Cymru Life Skills’ Charity of the Year, with the group setting themselves an ambitious target of £1,000 by the end of the year. They’re already well on their way, having raised £600 so far!

Hayley, from Shine Cymru Life Skills, said:
“Our young adults raise money each year for various charities and this year we have chosen to fundraise for Cwtsh Natur as we think that this is an extremely worthwhile cause to help families within the local community.”
A huge thank you to everyone at Shine Cymru for choosing to support Cwtsh Natur and helping us create a brighter, more welcoming outdoor space for local children and families.
We are so grateful to everyone fundraising for Swansea Bay Health Charity this month. Every fundraiser, challenge and event helps us continue supporting patients, families and staff across Swansea Bay University Health Board.
