Fantastic Fundraising: October

Here at Swansea Bay Health Charity, we meet many people with a connection to a cause who wish to give back to a Swansea Bay ward or department that has impacted their lives. Despite being a particularly rainy and cold month, October has been no exception!
Ynystawe Cricket Club hits home with Breast Care Unit donation
The Breast Care Unit at Singleton Hospital received a heartfelt donation of £1,587 from the Ynystawe Cricket Club after the members had experienced their own personal connections with the cause.
Motivated by personal cancer battles and success stories, the whole community came together for a series of fundraising events – including the club’s annual New Year’s Day fundraiser, a cake sale, a barbecue and its Ladies’ Festival. The club’s General Management Committee (GMC) generously contributed £500 towards the total to give the fundraiser an additional boost.
Chairman Phil Rowe said the cause was close to the club’s heart, having affected members and their families.
“Cancer is something very close to home. It is something that has affected several ladies within our club, and families within our club, so it’s very close to our heart,” he said.
Members of Ynystawe and Clydach Cricket Clubs came together to raise funds, demonstrating the power of community in supporting those affected by breast cancer.
Natasha Scamp, Breast Clinical Nurse Specialist shares gratitude on behalf of the Breastcare Nurses:

“The support shown by Ynystawe Cricket Club means so much to us as a breast team and to the patients we care for. Every donation is a reminder that our community stands alongside those facing breast cancer, offering hope, comfort and encouragement during difficult times. On behalf of our team, our patients, and their families, thank you for your generosity and for helping us provide that extra support when it is needed most. Well done Ynystawe Cricket Club!”
In support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Swansea Bay Health Charity encourages donations to the Breast Care Unit to support local breast care patients, families and staff. Donations can be made through Swansea Bay Health Charity’s digital fundraising page using fund code YE11 as a reference.
There’s no place like play in Morriston Hospital

During Play in Healthcare Week, Morriston Hospital’s paediatric play team received £285 worth of donations through their Amazon Wish List. Grateful families and charity supporters across Swansea Bay have kindly helped to provide children with sensory toys, fun activities and comfort items during their hospital stays.
The Wish List is a practical way for supporters to make a direct difference. Staff can highlight the specific items they need most, ensuring donations are useful and relevant to the children in their care. It also gives donors a clear idea of what they’re purchasing and how their contribution will help, making it easy to choose something meaningful to give.
The donations arrived during a particularly magical week at Morriston Hospital, as the play team celebrated Play in Healthcare Week with a Wizard of Oz theme: There’s no place like play.
Children and families enjoyed a packed programme of activities, including animal visits from Will’s Petting Zoo, scavenger hunts, sensory activities and colourful decorations.
Swansea Bay Health Charity Ambassador Joel Oates also joined the celebrations dressed as Dorothy, alongside Jodie from Purple Penguin Parties as Glinda. Together, they helped bring a little Oz-inspired magic to the hospital corridors.
A huge thank you to everyone who purchased an item from the Amazon Wish List and helped make Play in Healthcare Week special. Every donation helps the team provide the resources children need, when they need them most.
These thoughtful donations support the play team’s vital work in helping children feel more comfortable in unfamiliar surroundings, express their emotions and enjoy moments of normality while in hospital.
Book profits donation inspired by Morriston’s rich history
A £500 donation inspired by family history and a love of gardening is helping support the Traumatic Brain Injury Service at Morriston Hospital.
Gordon Stacey and co-author Sylvia Carlisle-Read recently published The Gardening Life of Head Gardener Herbert (Bert) Stacey 1905–1985, celebrating Gordon’s father, who worked as Morriston Hospital’s Head Gardener from 1942 until 1970.
Part of the book’s proceeds will support the Brain Injury Service, fulfilling Gordon’s long-held wish to give back to causes close to his heart.
During a visit to the service, Gordon’s wife, Margaret, and Sylvia explored its therapeutic garden, maintained by patients and staff through a seasonal gardening club.
The team hopes to use the donation to develop a patient-led garden project inspired by photographs from the book, creating a lasting tribute to Bert’s contribution to the hospital.
The project will bring together the hospital’s horticultural history with the therapeutic benefits of nature, supporting patients’ wellbeing, rehabilitation and recovery.

Running for Cwtsh Natur at the Richard Burton 10K

Fourteen passionate fundraisers are taking on the Richard Burton 10K this October, braving the autumn weather in their Swansea Bay Health Charity t-shirts to raise awareness and funds for the Cwtsh Natur Appeal.
Each runner has a personal connection to the cause, with staff from Neath Port Talbot Children’s Centre also taking part, including Wendy Godwin, Hollie Padfield and Nerys Mayers.
Cwtsh Natur aims to transform the Children’s Centre garden into a therapeutic outdoor space where children, young people and their families can enjoy fresh air, connect with nature and take a break from the clinical environment.
Every mile run and every pound raised brings the appeal one step closer to making this welcoming space a reality. These inspiring runners are helping create something special for children and families across Swansea Bay, showing how a community can come together to make a lasting difference.
A huge thank you to all 14 runners for supporting Cwtsh Natur. Every donation, big or small, will help bring this important project to life.
From heartfelt donations and community fundraising to incredible challenges and acts of kindness, our supporters continue to show just how much can be achieved when people come together. Every contribution, whatever its size, helps Swansea Bay Health Charity make a difference to patients, families and NHS staff across our health board. Thank you to everyone who has supported us this month. Your generosity is helping make a real difference where it matters most.
