Morriston Hospital’s Brain Injury Unit Transformation

The Brain Injury & Regional Neuropsychology Service at Morriston Hospital has recently undergone a remarkable transformation, turning its clinic into a more welcoming and supportive environment for patients and their families. This much-needed refurbishment was made possible thanks to the incredible generosity of patients, families, friends, and charitable donors.
The service is dedicated to providing high-quality NHS care while also prioritising the well-being of its patients. Many individuals receiving treatment here have been through life-changing and traumatic events, often spending long periods in hospital. Recognising the importance of a warm and inviting space, the department set out to make significant improvements that would help reduce anxiety and promote recovery.
Thanks to charitable donations, the clinic has undergone several upgrades, including:
● Repainted walls in soft, calming colours – with support from the SBU Estates Department.
● Bright, uplifting murals – designed to create a more positive and comforting atmosphere.
● Refurbished clinic rooms – enhancing comfort during treatment sessions.
● New furniture and plants – making the waiting area more welcoming.
● An improved music therapy space – fostering a sense of relaxation and well-being.
● Inspirational artwork – bringing hope and encouragement to patients and families.
Generosity That Made It Possible
This transformation would not have been possible without the kindness and generosity of donors. Special thanks go to the South West Wales Brain Injury Group (SWWBIG) for their generous £1,000 donation.
A particularly inspiring contribution came from one of the service’s brain injury survivors, who raised an incredible £2,751.25 through a JustGiving wedding fundraiser, asking guests to donate in lieu of gifts. These selfless contributions, along with many others, have enabled the department to create a space that will benefit patients and families for years to come.
The Impact on Patients
Suzanna Charles, from the Brain Injury & Regional Neuropsychology Service, shared why these improvements are so vital:
“Our service is about more than just delivering high-quality NHS care; it’s about truly caring for our patients and their families. Many of those we support have been through life-changing experiences, often spending long periods in hospital. We understand how vital it is to create a warm, comfortable, and less clinical setting, one that helps to reduce anxiety and promote well-being.”
For patients, the difference has been profound. One individual shared their thoughts on the new space:
“The murals create a really friendly and calming environment. They will make it much easier for new patients to relax during what is often an intimidating experience. The words ‘Safe Place’ come to mind. Even though I’ve been in these rooms countless times before, the murals make me feel much more relaxed, and I find comfort sitting among them when things get overwhelming.”
Thank You for Your Support
The Brain Injury & Regional Neuropsychology Service extends its deepest gratitude to everyone who contributed to this incredible project. Every donation, big or small, has helped create a space that fosters healing, comfort, and hope for those navigating the challenges of brain injury recovery.
