Transforming Morriston MS Care with £10,000 Donation

A Carmarthen fundraiser living with Multiple Sclerosis (MS), Carwyn Lewis, has donated £5,000 to the MS Specialist Care Unit at Morriston Hospital, bringing his total fundraising for the ward to more than £10,000.
The transformative £5,000 donation was made to the service by Carwyn in November 2025, after organising his third and most successful fundraising golf day at Derllys Court Golf Club in West Wales. The event drew around 140 players, with even more supporters joining later for a charity auction and raffle.
The day embraced a lively “LIV Golf” theme, complete with entertainment and refreshments throughout the course. Carwyn said the atmosphere was “brilliant” and praised everyone who helped make the day a success.
A personal mission
Carwyn’s motivation stems from his own MS journey. Diagnosed 13 years ago, he credits Swansea Bay UHB’s MS Specialist Team for turning his life around.

“My life turned upside down after diagnosis, and my early treatments just weren’t working. This team pretty much saved me. Since then, I’ve been stable and well, so I can’t complain at all,” he said.
His donations have steadily grown year on year; £2,200 at his first event, £3,000 on his second and now £5,000.
The funds support specialist MS care at Morriston Hospital, helping enhance services, improve patient experience, and fund additional equipment and resources not covered by core NHS funding.
The previous donations have already been put to good use to purchase cutting-edge equipment. Lead Neurology Nurse, Helen Owen, says:
“Since Carwyn’s original donation, we have put the money towards purchasing a portable bladder scanner, which can be used in our outreach clinics, which take place at many locations throughout South-West and mid-Wales. The bladder scanner means that we can assess and treat bladder problems in people with MS. This has greatly helped patient wellbeing by providing specialist care closer to home”
“It’s really inspiring that he has taken time to give back to the service following the care he’s received, and it makes us proud of the work we do as a service.”
A community effort
Carwyn extended heartfelt thanks to the many people who made the event possible, including his friends and family who supported and came along to the day, and Derllys Court Golf Club for hosting.
Carwyn also extends his thanks to close friend, Tommy Williams, who helped to launch the event but sadly passed away before this year’s fundraiser: “He helped me kick it off really so a massive thank you to him”.
“It was a full family and friends’ effort. I’m very grateful to all of them.”
The next steps
With the additional £5000, that Carwyn has raised, the MS Specialist Care Unit is looking to improve their patient education sessions; both for people newly diagnosed with MS, and more established patients called “Living Well with MS”. These sessions aim to help people and their families understand the condition and its management, while offering support to manage symptoms and stay informed.
Swansea Bay University Health Board Consultant Neurologist, Owen Pearson shares:
“Both these information days also provide an opportunity for people to meet and speak to others with similar experiences to them. Patients tell us that the information sessions are very valuable and help support them through the difficult experience of being diagnosed and living with Multiple Sclerosis.
“We thank Carwyn for his enthusiasm and dedication to raising money to allow the neuro-inflammatory team to continue to innovate and improve our care to individuals with Multiple Sclerosis.”
Carwyn is already planning the next event and is determined to raise the bar once again. The next charity golf day will take place on 30th May 2026 at Carmarthen Golf Club, where Carwyn’s friend Tommy Williams will be remembered with a memorial shield.
Swansea Bay Health Charity is incredibly grateful for Carwyn’s dedication and generosity in donating to SBUHB’s MS Specialist Care Unit charitable fund. Carwyn’s continued support helps enhance specialist MS care for patients across the region, ensuring people with MS can access high-quality, compassionate care throughout their treatment journey.
