A Swansea artist has donated a unique painting of the Lord Mayor’s Regatta to help raise funds for a cancer appeal championed by former Lord Mayor Councillor Cheryl Philpott.

The artwork was formally presented by Jeff Phillips to Councillor Philpott and Swansea Bay Health Charity Manager Lewis Bradley at the Guildhall on Tuesday 14 July.

The painting was inspired by the relaunch of the Lord Mayor’s Regatta during Councillor Philpott’s year in office and has been donated to support the Going the Extra Mile for Cancer Appeal.

And now residents can bid for the unique piece of work in an auction organised by the Going the Extra Mile for Cancer Appeal that will directly benefit the fundraising effort.

Mr Phillips, a Swansea-born artist whose work has been exhibited internationally, created the painting after attending this year’s regatta and taking photographs around Swansea Bay. The finished oil painting features sailing vessels on the bay alongside well-known landmarks including Mumbles Lighthouse and the RNLI lifeboat station.

Jeff Phillips said: “I was invited to one of Cheryl’s events and we were talking about the Lord Mayor’s Charity. I said I’d do a special painting to be auctioned for the charity.

“I attended the regatta, took a number of photographs and created the painting from those. Hopefully when it goes to auction it will raise a considerable sum for a very worthwhile cause.”

Former Lord Mayor Councillor Cheryl Philpott said: “Jeff very kindly offered to make a donation towards my Lord Mayor’s Charity, Going the Extra Mile for Cancer.

“One of the key events during my year as Lord Mayor was the relaunch of the Lord Mayor’s Regatta in Mumbles, so Jeff attended, took photographs and then created this absolutely stunning painting for us.

“It has been wonderful to see different people and organisations come together to support the appeal. I am incredibly grateful to Jeff for his generosity and the time he has invested in producing such a beautiful piece of artwork.”

The Going the Extra Mile for Cancer Appeal is run by Swansea Bay Health Charity, the official charity of Swansea Bay University Health Board. The appeal aims to help create a dedicated cancer outpatient facility at Singleton Hospital, bringing together specialist services for patients from across South West Wales.
