Honouring Rehaan’s Memory Through Fundraising

A football tournament and evening of entertainment held in memory of Rehaan Akhtar have raised an incredible £11,240 for the South Wales Police Youth Trust and the Renal Fund that supports the Liz Baker Renal Unit at Morriston Hospital.
Organised by Rehaan’s family and friends, the fundraising events were held to honour his memory while supporting two causes that were very close to their hearts.
The day began with a football tournament at Bryngwyn School, before friends, family and supporters came together for an evening of entertainment and a raffle at The Phil Bennett.
A particularly meaningful aspect of the football tournament was that every team taking part had a connection to Rehaan, his family or his friends, making the event a deeply personal opportunity for everyone to come together and celebrate his life.
The fundraising total reached £11,240, with £5,620 being donated to the Liz Baker Renal Unit at Morriston Hospital, while the remaining funds will support the South Wales Police Youth Trust.
The fundraising was made possible through the football tournament, raffle ticket sales, donations via the JustGiving page, as well as evening entertainment. A huge number of local businesses and individuals also generously donated raffle prizes, while local businesses supported the tournament by supplying food and refreshments.

Reflecting on the events, Gareth Payne, one of the organisers and friend of Rehaan’s said:
“The biggest highlight was seeing the incredible turnout and the amount of love and support shown for Rehaan. Seeing all the teams come together, knowing that every one of them had a connection to him, his family or his friends, made the tournament particularly special.
“It was also amazing to see everyone enjoying themselves while raising money for two such important causes. The whole day went so smoothly thanks to the volunteers, Calsonic Kansei SV AFC, Bryngwyn School and everyone who helped behind the scenes.
“Being able to honour Rehaan in a way that reflected how loved and missed he is was definitely the most special part.”
The family added that they were “overwhelmed and incredibly grateful” by the final fundraising total.
“Raising £11,240 overall is an unbelievable amount, and knowing that £5,620 will go directly to the Liz Baker Renal Unit at Morriston Hospital makes it even more special.
“The other half will go to the South Wales Police Youth Trust, meaning that both causes will benefit from the generosity of everyone involved. We never could have imagined raising such an incredible amount when we started planning the events.
“It showed just how loved Rehaan is and how much he continues to mean to so many people. We are incredibly proud and grateful that we were able to honour him in such a special way.” Gareth added.
Dr Aled Williams, Clinical Lead at the Liz Baker Renal Unit, said:
“Raising £11,240 in Rehaan Akhtar’s memory is a remarkable achievement, and we are honoured to receive £5,620 to support our renal services.
“It is inspiring to see so many people come together to celebrate and honour Rehaan’s memory through such a positive and meaningful event. We are hugely grateful for the support and generosity shown, and we are already looking forward to next year, when we hope to enter a Renal Team and be part of this amazing occasion ourselves.”
Swansea Bay Health Charity is incredibly grateful to Rehaan’s family, friends, the organisers, volunteers, participating teams, sponsors, local businesses and everyone who donated or attended for helping to create such a memorable tribute.
Lewis Bradley, Charity Manager at Swansea Bay Health Charity, said:
“It was clear to see just how loved Rehaan was when talking to his friends and family who came along for the cheque presentation. The amount of effort, planning and execution that went into the event was absolutely tremendous.
“Having friends in West Wales, they had also heard about the fundraising activities, which once again shows just how far the impact of the day reached. It was a fantastic event, but more importantly, it has created a legacy in Rehaan’s memory that will last a lifetime.

“We are incredibly grateful to everyone who played a part in making the event such a success and helping to turn a day of remembrance into something so positive and meaningful. Who knows, maybe there’s a Liz Baker Renal team next year”
The fundraising will make a meaningful difference to both the Liz Baker Renal Unit at Morriston Hospital, while ensuring that Rehaan’s memory continues to inspire people to come together and make a positive difference in the community.
