Trekking Everest for Singleton Cancer Centre

Local fundraiser, William Thomas is currently taking on the incredible challenge of trekking to Everest Base Camp to raise money for Swansea Bay Health Charity’s Going the Extra Mile appeal – all in memory of his late father.
Will, who lost his dad to pancreatic cancer in November 2023, wanted to give something back to the NHS staff who cared for him on Ward 12 at Singleton Hospital.
“My dad received great care from the team at Singleton,” Will said. “He and my mother loved hiking, which is something they passed on to me. So this challenge felt like the perfect way to say thank you – by doing something that connects us while raising money for local cancer services.”
Unsure where to start, Will soon discovered a winning formula for fundraising; events that brought the community together like quiz nights and bingo.
“I found these events a really effective way to raise money,” he said. “The three host venues, The Gwachel, The Dillwyn Arms and Trebanos Rugby Club were all so supportive and keen to help. I’d love to give a big thank you to the staff at all three venues for their generosity.”
Thanks to the events, donations and prize contributions from local businesses, Will has already raised over £2,000 – double his original target!
“I’m so grateful to everyone who has supported me, whether by attending events, donating prizes, or contributing online. Whatever I raise on top of this will be wonderful!”
Training for the Trek of a Lifetime
Will has spent recent months hiking across Wales in preparation for the trek, taking on challenges such as the Beat the Beacons 22-mile hike, Cadair Idris, as well as routes across Snowdonia, the Pembrokeshire Coastal Path and the Gower.
“I’ve been pushing myself at the gym most evenings and doing early morning hill walks near my home. I’m excited but also quite nervous now that I’m about to depart – hopefully all the training will have paid off!”
Supporting Going the Extra Mile
Funds raised by Will will support the Going the Extra Mile for Cancer appeal, which helps enhance patient care and staff wellbeing across local NHS services.
Everyone at Swansea Bay Health Charity wishes Will the best of luck as he embarks on his trek to Everest Base Camp, and we’ll be cheering him on every step of the way!
