30 Miles in May Returns with Focus on Child Health, Wellbeing and Inclusivity

Swansea Bay residents are being encouraged to step up for a powerful cause this spring as 30 Miles in May returns – this time with a focus on transforming children’s lives through inclusive, nature-based therapy.
The month-long virtual challenge invites participants from Swansea, Neath, Port Talbot and surrounding areas to complete 30 miles throughout May while raising a minimum of £30 via their online fundraising page. Every step taken will support the Cwtsh Natur Appeal. As an incentive, the first 30 fundraisers to reach £100 will receive a free t-shirt and a mystery goodie.
Led by Swansea Bay Health Charity, the Cwtsh Natur Appeal aims to raise £200,000 to transform the garden at Neath Port Talbot Children’s Centre into a safe, sensory-rich outdoor therapy space for thousands of local children with additional needs.
Beyond the miles and fundraising targets, 30 Miles in May highlights a growing local movement of using everyday activity to build a healthier community while directly supporting our local NHS charity. Digital Fundraising & Engagement Officer at Swansea Bay Health Charity, Catrin Jones shares:
“Last year we saw a lot of participation from NHS staff and supporters, so we’re really excited to see how this year’s event can impact the Cwtsh Natur Appeal and give it the boost it needs to hit the £200,000 fundraising target.”
Launched last year, 30 Miles in May exceeded expectations. The challenge drew 93 participants – including 57 Health Board staff – and raised an impressive £6,129 towards the charity’s previous appeal. It also proved the powerful role that collective action and wellbeing-focused initiatives can play in driving both awareness and impact.
NHS staff participation was a key success factor, with teams across the Health Board embracing the challenge. Notably, the NICU staff team raised £1,500 through their combined efforts, demonstrating how teamwork and shared purpose can significantly amplify results. Senior leadership also played a visible role. Chief Executive Abi Harris and the Executive Team took part, reinforcing the connection between staff wellbeing and community engagement. Their involvement will continue this year, with hopes of inspiring even greater participation across the Health Board.
Participants can walk, run, cycle or move in any way that suits them, making the challenge accessible to all fitness levels. The flexibility of the virtual format ensures that anyone can take part, whether individually or as part of a team.
Registration is now open via Enthuse, and organisers are encouraging individuals, families, schools, workplaces and community groups to sign up early and start planning their miles.
With momentum already building, 30 Miles in May is set to once again bring together the Swansea Bay community to help create a space for local children that supports therapy, encourages movement, and nurtures well-being.
