Fantastic Fundraising: August
This August, Swansea Bay Health Charity has received more than £42,000 from kind donors aiming to make a difference to our local health services in Swansea Bay University Health Board. Thank you to everybody who has come along to one of our charity events, fundraised for us or shown support in any way throughout the summer. Every donation counts towards something bigger – and we truly couldn’t be more grateful for each and every supporter. Here’s how our fantastic fundraisers have been making an impact!
Brownies fundraiser fuelled by a personal NICU battle
In the lead up to her 8th birthday, Isabelle took on a fundraising challenge to raise £150 for Singleton NICU, having been a very tiny patient there herself.
“The nurses and doctors helped me get better when I was born very early, only weighing 1 pound 10 ounces. Mummy and Daddy always say what amazing work they did looking after me, them and other families. So, I’ve decided for my charity badge, from now until my 8th birthday the 26th of August, I am going to walk at least 30 miles during this month, to raise money for equipment they might use”, Isabelle shares.
Not only has Isabelle proudly reached her targets, but she walked over 40 miles and raised an impressive £2,110 for Singleton Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
Isabelle’s mother, Rachel, says she is proud of Isabelle’s hard work and dedication to fundraising for a cause so close to her heart:
“When Isabelle started the challenge, she originally set herself a target of walking 30 miles before her 8th birthday and raising £150 for the Singleton Neonatal Unit – the incredible unit that helped her when she was born at just 27 weeks weighing only 1lb 10oz.”
20 touch rugby teams fundraise with passion
This year’s Touched by Cancer event brought 20 women’s touch rugby teams from across South Wales together and raised an outstanding £54,000, helping Swansea Bay Health Charity’s Going the Extra Mile for Cancer Appeal surpass its ambitious £200,000 target. In total, the tournament has contributed £78,000 to the appeal, accounting for almost 40% of the overall fundraising total! This demonstrates the power of community-led fundraising.
Reaching this milestone means work can now begin on transforming the former chemotherapy unit at the South West Wales Cancer Centre into a modern, welcoming outpatient department that will enhance the experience of thousands of cancer patients and their families each year.
Special thanks go to fundraising champions, Tonna Turbettes, who raised £8,382 through various activities in the lead up to the tournament – including their very own tournament in memory of Andrew Spittle, who underwent treatment in South West Wales Cancer Centre in Singleton Hospital.
Building on this success, Swansea Bay Health Charity’s next steps are to deliver the refurbishment project, reopen a volunteer-led tea bar, and continue working with supporters, fundraisers and local communities to create even greater opportunities to improve healthcare experiences across Swansea Bay.
Welsh cyclists raise £75,000 for local cancer care
The impact made from the riders in Jiffy’s Cancer 50 Challenge this year has been nothing short of incredible. Starting in Cardiff City Stadium, 445 riders joined us to ride 56 miles to Bracelet Bay in Swansea. Between fundraising from riders, donations from sponsors and kind donations on the day, the challenge raised an amazing amount of £75,000!
The funds raised have been split equally between Swansea Bay Health Charity and Velindre Cancer Charity, impacting cancer services locally in South Wales. With already 155 riders signed up for next year’s challenge, we’re excited to see the future impact this ride will have. Interested in signing up for next year’s ride? Registrations are open now!
